Why Face Mists Are Your Winter Skin Savior

Your skin needs a drink. Check out this roundup of the best face mists for all your winter skincare woes. Hydrated skin awaits you!

I love a good face mist any time of year but when the cold weather starts and the snow falls, it’s time to really use the benefits of face mists to your advantage. A spritz here and there gives us a nice refresh and a dewy glow but face mists are known for their hydrating benefits! Face mists can even increase the efficacy of your routine, but more on that later…

Hydrated skin is a winter non-negotiable. As someone who suffers the constant battle of ‘is my skin oily or is it just dehydrated?’ face mists have really helped me out. They’re a simple step in your skincare routine that can be added in almost anywhere because they’re light like water. So if you’ve been looking for an easy solution to your dry winter skin, face mists might just be exactly what you need!

What should I look for in a mist?

While there’s nearly a face mist for every skin concern and occasion, during winter you’ll want to reach for mists with the most hydrating properties. We’re talking about ingredients like hyaluronic acid, cactus extract, and rose water to name a few.

However you mist, try as best you can to avoid ones with alcohol in them. Not a terribly big deal, just make sure a face mist isn’t the only hydrating product in your routine because alcohol can have a tendency to dry out your skin. If you’re wanting to know more about ‘good’ or ‘bad alcohols in skincare, check out this handy cheat sheet from Hello Ava.

How can face mists elevate my routine?

My best tip for using face mists (thank you Dr. Buhac of Saratoga Dermatology) is to completely saturate your skin with the mist after cleansing and toning. Then, follow up with your serum while your face is wet. This process allows your serum to penetrate into deeper layers of your epidermis and therefore, keeps your skin happy and hydrated for longer. Cheers to that!

And like I mentioned, you can mist whenever your skin needs a boost of hydration. Long car rides, stuck working from home in a dry apartment, or if you’ve been out in the cold for too long…you better mist yourself!

Mists to save your winter skin

BATHING CULTURE Golden Hour Hydrosol

Sometimes I skip my daily exfoliating toner on days when I’m not feeling particularly hydrated and dewy. Instead, I use this mist two times throughout my routine. One before my serums and then another misting to seal the hydration deal after my moisturizer. It has hand-harvested neroli and rose oil in it to bring hydration A-game.

TOWER 28 SOS Save.Our.Skin Daily Rescue Facial Spray

I think the entire beauty industry is obsessed with this face mist from Tower 28. It’s been my maskne, eczema, and dry skin HERO. Seriously, I can’t believe it can do all those things. SOS has Hypochlorous Acid to help soothe any redness and get your skin to calm down.

Kiehl’s Cactus Flower & “Tibetan Ginseng” Hydrating Mist

Perfect if your skin is feeling a little dull, the ginseng in this mist will perk it right up! Cactus flower is best known in skincare for helping you retain moisture. Plus, this one smells sooo calming.

YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE Adaptogen Soothe + Hydrate Activated mist with Reishi + Ashwagandha

Hello antioxidants! YTTP says ‘like a serum in a mist’ when talking about this product. It does more than just hydrate your skin with antioxidant adaptogens and hyaluronic acid, it has peptides too for soothing and anti-aging benefits.

BIOSSANCE Squalane + Hyaluronic Toning Mist

Another anti-aging hero. This is made with two different types of hyaluronic acid and contains squalane to help the appearance of fine lines. This Biossance mist hydrates and plumps your skin like no other and, it’s an alcohol-free formula. I don’t go anywhere without this in my bag.

TATA HARPER Hydrating Floral Essence Moisturising Toner

You’ll love how refreshing this mist is. Keep it in the fridge so it’s extra cooling when you use it. This has two types of hyaluronic acid alongside rose, lavender, and neroli hydrosols. Great for plumping and curing the driest of skin.

TULA SKINCARE Signature Glow Refreshing & Brightening Face Mist

Tula is the brand we all bow down to when it comes to probiotics and superfood use. This mist brightens and gives your skin a healthy glow while protecting you against blue light (a godsend) and pollution. It’s filled with hyaluronic acid, strawberry and kiwi water, and lingonberry. Both oil & alcohol-free and it gives you a little pearlescent glow.

CAUDALIE Grape Water

A cult-favorite product for celebs and MUA’s. You have probably heard of this magic water a time or two. It’s quite literally 100% organic grape water, and it gives your skin a big dose of hydration thanks to grape water’s ability to retain water for extended periods of time. Great for sensitive skin and can be used to combat any irritation (even rosacea flare-ups) besides dryness.

Dr. Jart+ Cicapair Tiger Grass Calming Mist

One of my ultimate favorites in the Cicapair collection. This mist is super fine and perfect for soothing sensitive skin and repairing your skin barrier. If you’re someone who struggles with excessive dryness in the winter or has eczema, using a mist like this one from Dr. Jart is essential for repairing your skin barrier and keeping it functioning properly.

Scratch Goods jasmine rose skin drink

It’s in the name, your skin will drink this right up. What works so well in this product? Rose to water to calm redness, aloe to hydrate and tone, and glycerin to moisturize and smooth your skin. Scratch Goods notes that may use this on their body as well to target dry spots alongside moisturizer.
