Understanding Silicones

Silicone is an ingredient found in many skincare, makeup, and beauty products. The silky properties of this ingredient make it a favorite for brands in the cosmetics industry. Silicone is used because it helps create a film or layer on top of the skin to temporarily smooth it. Silicones are used in cosmetics because they provide a great slip and spreadability.

Unfortunately, for the same reasons they are popularly used, they are also commonly avoided. Some have said that silicones cause breakouts, irritation, a feeling that the skin can’t breathe, clumping of cosmetic products, and finding it difficult to wash off. As a result, many people are avoiding them — and many companies shy away from using them.
