Understanding Fungal Acne (Pityrosporum Folliculitis/Malassezia Folliculitis)

Fungal Acne is a persistent acne-like condition that does not respond well to traditional acne-treating methods. This type of acne is different from regular acne as the bacteria causing it is completely different. Certain groups and classes of ingredients have been shown to promote and feed the growth of an overgrowth of fungi.

Although we’ve tried our best to identify as many of these ingredients as possible, malezzeria can thrive in complex conditions. That’s why you should always read your products’ labels to see what they contain and maintain a product journal for future self-identification. Additionally, some ingredients that may be good for your skin might also provide food for malassezia growth. However, it is important to note that not all ingredients necessarily provoke or exacerbate the condition.

Please note that due to the lack of substantial research into this area, it’s likely there are other triggers for fungal acne. Therefore the Fungal Acne-Safe label does not constitute medical advice.
