Understanding “Allergen-Free”

The EU’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has identified 26 cosmetic ingredients that have the highest potential to cause skin allergies as demonstrated in clinical or epidemiological studies.

Look out for the Allergen free label to know your cosmetic or skincare product to try to avoid these 26 identified cosmetic ingredients.  You can find more information on EU’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety’s official website.

The 26 ingredients include:

  1. Fragrance chemicals, which according to existing knowledge, are most frequently reported and well-recognized consumer allergens.
    Amyl cinnamal, Amylcinnamyl alcohol, Benzyl alcohol, Benzyl salicylate, Cinnamyl alcohol, Cinnamal, Citral, Coumarin, Eugenol, Geraniol, Hydroxycitronellal, Hydroxymethylpentyl-cyclohexenecarboxaldehyde, Isoeugenol
  2. Fragrance chemicals, which are less frequently reported and thus less documented as consumer allergens.
    Anisyl alcohol, Benzyl benzoate, Benzyl cinnamate, Citronellol, Farnesol, Hexyl cinnamaldehyde, Lilial, d-Limonene, Linalool, Methyl heptine carbonate, 3-Methyl-4-(2,6,6-trimethyl-2-cyclohexen-1-yl)-3-buten-2-one
  3. Last but not least, two fragrances (natural mixtures) by their common names.
    Oak moss, Tree moss
