10-Free Nail Polishes

Seeing “10-free” nail polishes everywhere too? Here’s what they are and why you need some in your life ASAP.

Another day, another healthy trend to hop on in the beauty world! This time around, we’re talking 10-free nail polishes! As most nail aficionados know, switching up your nail look often means being exposed to a multitude of toxic chemicals (I mean, the smell alone says it all!) that aren’t good for your lungs, skin, and nail beds. It’s just been the name of the nail game for years. But thankfully, with the clean beauty trend on the rise, nail polish has finally joined in on the nontoxic ingredient fun.

What Does 10-Free Mean?

To put it simply, “10-free” describes nail polishes that are created without 10 of the most common toxins found in nail polishes: Toluene, Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin, Camphor, Ethyl Tosylamide, Xylene, parabens, animal by-products, and fragrance.

This hard-to-pronounce list of chemicals is linked to many health risks, including cancer, birth defects, respiratory problems, headaches, and many more. Scary, huh? That’s why ingredient lists are so, so important–no matter the beauty product. Luckily, nail polish brands are finally starting to eliminate these toxic chemicals from their formulas, which means you and your nail tech can let your nail polish imagination run wild in a healthier, safer way. Also, nail polishes “free” of toxic ingredients don’t just stop at “10,” there are some brands that go even higher (the higher the number, the more toxic ingredients the nail polish is formulated without).
